Just 30 minutes drive from Lisbon, the picturesque town of Alcochete on the banks of the Tagus is the perfect setting to escape the the urban hustle and bustle.

On its doorstep, the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve is a paradise of captivating beauty, home to diverse species of birds including spectacular flamingoes.  Rich in tradition and culture, Alcochete is also famous for its bull runs, fado and folk festivals, not to mention its variety of restaurants offering excellent regional and international cuisine. 

Granted town status by King D. Manuel I in 1515, Alcochete embarked on a golden era as a riverside port that is reflected in its beautifully adorned churches, chapels and aristocratic manors.

Today Alcochete enjoys modern access and infrastructures but remains steeped in historic atmosphere and bathed by a magnificent light that charms all who visit.

Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve

The spectacular migrating birdlife is one of the nature reserve's most impressive attractions, featuring around 194 different species that find shelter in this sanctuary every year.
A paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike, you can enjoy special guided tours to observe and photograph the region's birdlife including egrets and flamingoes.
